Did you know that dogs and cats also get diabetes? It is not as common as it is in humans, but it is still reasonably common. In the last two weeks we have diagnosed two dogs with diabetes. Both are older and a little overweight which are common factors for developing diabetes but the actual cause is unknown. They both had very large thirsts and were panting more than usual. The first was lethargic, off food and has lost some weight whilst the second was otherwise “business as usual”. It is treated very effectively with insulin injections which their owners will give at home. Dogs even have their own insulin medication designed just for them. Treated, they live happy, normal lives. The photo shows one of these patients receiving their first insulin injection.
